Filing your income tax return in Pakistan is easier than most people think and doing it on time in 2026 saves you from heavy penalties and a costly late surcharge. This guide explains exactly how to file income tax return in Pakistan online through the FBR IRIS portal, what documents you need, the deadline, and how filing makes you a filer on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).
Whether you’re a salaried employee, a freelancer, or a small business owner, you can follow these steps to file your return correctly.
What Is an Income Tax Return?
An income tax return is an annual declaration you submit to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) showing your income, expenses, assets, and the tax you’ve already paid during the year. Filing it is what officially makes you a filer.
In Pakistan, returns are filed by tax year. Tax Year 2026 covers income earned from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, this is the return you file in 2026.
Who Needs to File a Tax Return in Pakistan?
You are generally required to file if any of the following apply:
- Your annual income is more than Rs 600,000
- You are a salaried employee, business owner, freelancer, landlord, or pensioner with taxable income
- You own immovable property of 500 sq. yards or more, or a flat
- You own a vehicle of 1000cc or above
- You hold a commercial or industrial electricity connection
- You have a National Tax Number (NTN) or have been issued an FBR notice
Even if your income is below the taxable limit, filing keeps you on the ATL and unlocks filer benefits, so it’s usually worth it.
Why Filing Matters: The Filer Advantage
Once your return is filed and accepted, your name appears on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL), making you a filer. Filers pay much lower withholding tax on property transactions, vehicle purchases, banking, and dividends than non-filers. Filing on time also means you avoid penalties and the ATL surcharge (explained below).

How to File Income Tax Return Online in Pakistan (FBR IRIS)
Filing is done on the FBR IRIS portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk. It’s free — you only pay any tax that is actually due. Follow these steps:
Step 1 — Get Your NTN (First-Time Filers)
If you don’t already have login credentials, register on IRIS as an unregistered person using your CNIC, mobile number, and email. For most individuals, your CNIC becomes your NTN. Need it done fast and correctly? See our NTN registration service.
Step 2 — Log In to IRIS
Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and log in with your Registration No. (CNIC/NTN) and password. (FBR will never ask for your password by phone or email, never share it or your OTP with anyone.)
Step 3 — Open the Return and Select the Tax Year
On the left panel, go to Declaration and open Return of Income filed voluntarily u/s 114(1). Select Tax Year 2026. The form opens in your Drafts.
Step 4 — Enter Your Income
Enter your income under the correct heads salary, business, freelance/services, property/rent, or other sources. Add the tax already deducted (for example, tax withheld by your employer, or advance tax on your phone, vehicle, or bank transactions), so you get credit for it.
Step 5 — Salaried Persons: Complete Declaration Form 114(I)
If you’re salaried, IRIS provides a simplified Declaration form 114(I). You must complete this form for your return to be submitted successfully.
Step 6 — Complete Your Wealth Statement (Section 116)
Individuals must also file a Wealth Statement (Section 116) a list of your assets and liabilities as of 30 June 2026. Importantly, your wealth statement must reconcile: the change in your wealth from last year should equal your income minus your expenses. If it doesn’t reconcile, IRIS won’t let you submit the return, so take care with this step.
Step 7 — Calculate, Review, and Submit
Click Calculate so IRIS computes your tax based on the current slabs. Review everything carefully errors can trigger notices later. When you’re confident, Submit. Your submission is successful when both the Return and the Wealth Statement move from the Draft folder to Completed Task.
Step 8 — Download Acknowledgement & Check Your ATL Status
After submission, download your acknowledgement (Form 114) from Submitted Returns and save it as proof. Then confirm you’re on the ATL search the Active Taxpayer List on the FBR website, or send ATL (space) your 13-digit CNIC to 9966 by SMS. Allow a few days for the list to update.
The 2026 Deadline, Penalties & Late Surcharge
For Tax Year 2026, the last date for individuals to file is 30 September 2026. Filing on or before this date keeps you on the ATL automatically with no penalty and no surcharge.
If you file late:
- A late-filing penalty applies under Section 182 (broadly 0.1% of the tax payable for each day of default, subject to legal minimums and caps).
- To get back onto the ATL as a late filer in 2026, there is now an ATL surcharge of Rs 25,000 for individuals (Rs 50,000 for AOPs and Rs 100,000 for companies).
The lesson is simple: file early and avoid all of it. The IRIS portal also gets overloaded near the deadline, so don’t leave it to the last day.
Salaried vs Business vs Freelancer — Quick Note
- Salaried: usually the simplest return salary certificate + Declaration 114(I) + wealth statement.
- Business owners: prepare an income and expense statement; business income has different treatment.
- Freelancers: income from Upwork, Fiverr, or international clients is taxable in Pakistan and must be declared; you may qualify for specific freelancer treatment. Declare foreign remittances properly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking salary tax deduction makes you a filer — it doesn’t. You must file the return.
- An unreconciled wealth statement — the number one reason submissions get stuck.
- Forgetting to claim tax already deducted (you may be owed a refund).
- Not declaring side income (rent, freelancing) — this can trigger an audit later.
- Waiting until 30 September when the portal is slow.
Should You File Yourself or Get Help?
A simple salaried return can be filed yourself in 15–30 minutes if your documents are ready. But business income, property, foreign income, or a complicated wealth statement are easy to get wrong and mistakes can mean notices, penalties, or overpaid tax. In those cases, professional help pays for itself.
