Staring at the IRIS portal and not sure which button to click? This guide walks you through exactly how to file your return on IRIS every step, from opening the form to a successful submission, so you can complete your IRIS return filing with confidence.
Before you start: make sure you can log in to IRIS, have your documents ready, and have completed the profile-update prompt (Form 181) if IRIS asks. For login and registration help, see our IRIS portal guide. For the documents checklist, see documents required to file your return.
What You’ll Need Open While Filing
- Salary certificate (salaried) or income/expense records (business/freelance)
- Bank statements for the tax year (1 Jul 2025 – 30 Jun 2026)
- Details of tax already deducted (salary withholding, vehicle, mobile, banking)
- Assets & liabilities list (for the wealth statement)
Step 1 – Log In and Update Your Profile
Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and log in with your CNIC and password (use Chrome or Firefox). If IRIS shows the profile-update message, complete Form 181 first update your bank accounts (IBAN), employer details, and utility connections. This is a one-time step; once done, the return form unlocks.
Step 2 – Open the Return Form
In the left menu, click Declaration, then select “Return of Income filed voluntarily u/s 114(1)”. Choose Tax Year 2026 from the dropdown. IRIS creates the return in your Drafts folder.
Step 3 – Enter Your Income (Head by Head)
The return form has tabs for each income head. Fill in only the ones that apply to you:
- Salary: enter gross salary from your salary certificate and the tax deducted by your employer
- Income from Business: enter turnover, expenses, and net business income (for sole proprietors and businesses)
- Income from Property: enter rental income received
- Capital Gains: if you sold shares, property, or other capital assets at a profit
- Income from Other Sources: profit on savings/deposits, dividends, prize winnings, freelance income, etc.
Tip: enter all sources even small ones. Undeclared income can trigger audit questions later. Also enter any adjustable taxes already paid (advance tax on vehicle, mobile, bank, utilities) so you get credit.
Step 4 – Tax Deducted / Adjustable
IRIS has a section for tax already deducted or collected, the taxes withheld from your salary, banking transactions, vehicle, mobile bills, etc. Make sure you enter all of them. These are credited against your total tax liability, and if the total deducted exceeds what you owe, you’re entitled to a refund.
Step 5 – Complete Form 114(I) (Salaried Persons)
If you’re salaried, IRIS requires you to fill the simplified Declaration Form 114(I) also known as the IRIS Form 114 statement for salaried individuals. It asks for your employer details, salary breakup, and allowances. Your return cannot be submitted until 114(I) is complete, so don’t skip it.
Step 6 – File Your Wealth Statement (Section 116)
Open the Wealth Statement tab (Section 116). Enter your assets (property, vehicles, bank balances, cash, investments) and liabilities (loans) as of 30 June 2026, plus your personal expenses for the year.
The reconciliation rule: your wealth statement must reconcile, the change in your net worth from last year must equal your income minus your expenses. If it doesn’t reconcile, IRIS will not let you submit. This is the #1 reason returns get stuck. Double-check every figure.
Step 7 – Click Calculate
Once income and wealth statement are filled, click the Calculate button. IRIS computes your tax liability based on the applicable salary/income tax slabs, credits your adjustable taxes, and shows your net tax payable or refundable. Review the calculation carefully.
To understand how the slabs work, see our income tax slabs 2025–26 guide.
Step 8 – Pay Any Tax Due (If Applicable)
If IRIS shows tax payable, generate a PSID (Payment Slip ID) from the Payment section and pay online or at a designated bank branch. Wait for the payment to reflect in IRIS (usually within 24 hours) before submitting.
Step 9 – Review and Submit
Go through every section one last time. When you’re confident, click Submit.
How to confirm success: your return is successfully submitted when both the Return and the Wealth Statement move from the Draft folder to the Completed Task folder. If either stays in Drafts, something is incomplete check the validation messages.
Step 10 – Download Your Acknowledgement
After successful submission, go to Submitted Returns / Completed Tasks and download your acknowledgement receipt (Form 114). Save it as proof of filing. Your name will appear on the Active Taxpayer List after FBR’s next weekly update (typically Monday).
What If Something Goes Wrong?
- Wealth statement won’t reconcile: re-check assets, liabilities, expenses, and prior-year figures until the gap is zero.
- Form 114(I) incomplete: every field in the salaried declaration must be filled — including employer NTN.
- Captcha / session timeout: refresh, use Chrome, save work often. File during off-peak hours (early morning).
- PSID payment not reflecting: wait 24 hours; call FBR helpline 051-111-772-772 if not updated.
- Still stuck: see our full IRIS portal troubleshooting guide.
Can I Revise My Return After Submitting?
Yes. IRIS allows you to file a revised return for the same tax year if you discover errors after submission. Open a new return for the same year, correct the figures, and resubmit. The revised return replaces the earlier one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I start filing on IRIS?
Log in at iris.fbr.gov.pk, go to Declaration, select “Return of Income filed voluntarily u/s 114(1),” and choose Tax Year 2026. The form opens in your Drafts.
Q: What is Form 114(I) on IRIS?
It’s a simplified declaration form for salaried individuals. You enter your employer details, salary breakup, and allowances. IRIS won’t let you submit your return until 114(I) is complete.
Q: Why won’t my return submit?
The most common reasons: an unreconciled wealth statement, an incomplete Form 114(I), or unpaid tax due. Check the validation messages IRIS shows for the specific issue.
Q: How do I know my return was submitted successfully?
Both the Return and the Wealth Statement must move from the Draft folder to the Completed Task folder. If either stays in Drafts, something is still incomplete.
Q: Can I file on my phone?
IRIS is a web portal, not a mobile app, and works best on a desktop/laptop with Chrome or Firefox. You can technically access it on a phone browser, but the experience is much smoother on a larger screen.
Q: What if I made a mistake after submitting?
You can file a revised return for the same tax year on IRIS. Open a new return, correct the figures, and resubmit; the revision replaces the earlier one.
Q: Is filing on IRIS free?
Yes. Filing is free, you only pay any tax that is actually due.
