How to Calculate Your Tax Manually (Step by Step)
Don’t see your exact salary above? Here’s how to work out how much tax on your salary yourself:
- Take your annual gross salary (monthly salary × 12).
- Find which slab your annual salary falls in (see above).
- Apply the formula for that slab: fixed amount + percentage of the excess above the slab floor.
- The result is your annual income tax.
- Divide by 12 for the approximate monthly deduction.
Worked Example: Rs 100,000 Monthly Salary
Annual salary: Rs 100,000 × 12 = Rs 1,200,000
Slab: Rs 600,001 – 1,200,000 (1% of amount above Rs 600,000)
Taxable amount: Rs 1,200,000 – Rs 600,000 = Rs 600,000
Tax: Rs 600,000 × 1% = Rs 6,000 per year (Rs 500/month)
Effective rate: 0.5%
Worked Example: Rs 200,000 Monthly Salary
Annual salary: Rs 200,000 × 12 = Rs 2,400,000
Slab: Rs 2,200,001 – 3,200,000 (Rs 116,000 + 23% of amount above Rs 2,200,000)
Taxable excess: Rs 2,400,000 – Rs 2,200,000 = Rs 200,000
Tax: Rs 116,000 + (Rs 200,000 × 23%) = Rs 116,000 + Rs 46,000 = Rs 162,000 per year (Rs 13,500/month)
Effective rate: 6.8%
Things That Can Change Your Tax
- Tax credits: eligible donations, investments, or education expenses can reduce your tax
- Adjustable taxes: withholding on your vehicle, mobile, banking, and utilities is credited against your liability
- Additional income: rent, freelancing, or profit on savings is added to your total and may push you into a higher slab
- Surcharge: if your total income exceeds Rs 10,000,000, a 9% surcharge applies on top
The table above shows tax on salary alone. For a precise figure including credits and other income, file your return or consult a tax professional.
Why Filing Matters Even If Your Tax Is Low
Even if the table shows Rs 0 or a small tax, filing your return makes you a filer. Which means lower withholding on property, vehicles, and banking, plus the ability to claim a refund on any excess tax deducted. See filer vs non-filer to understand exactly what you save.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much tax is on a Rs 100,000 monthly salary?
On a Rs 100,000/month salary (Rs 1,200,000/year), the annual tax is Rs 6,000 (Rs 500/month) under the 2025-26 salaried slabs, an effective rate of just 0.5%.
Q: Is salary below Rs 50,000/month tax-free?
Yes. A monthly salary of Rs 50,000 equals Rs 600,000/year, which is the exemption threshold, so there is zero tax.
Q: Does this calculator include deductions and credits?
No. The figures assume gross salary with no deductions or credits. Eligible tax credits, adjustable taxes, and additional income will change your actual liability.
Q: Are these slabs the same for business income?
No. These are salaried-person slabs. Business owners and non-salaried individuals face higher rates and different thresholds.
Q: What if my salary changed mid-year?
Calculate based on total salary received during the full tax year (1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026), not just your current monthly figure.
Q: When are these slabs applicable?
These apply to Tax Year 2026 (income from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026), which is the return due by 30 September 2026.
